Dress Makers Pins are the best to use because they are easy to handle, can be used on most fabrics, and are great to use for many projects.

Are useful when doing repairs and finishing sewing projects such as pillows.

Allow you to keep your pins in one Place.

Tailors Chalk or Vanishing Pens

This is the perfect option for temporally marking fabrics and will be used for most projects.

Sewing Machine Needles

It is always good to have an extra set of sewing machine needles available just incase replacement is needed since the needles can break during sewing projects. Check your sewing machine manual for the types of needles used for your sewing machine.

Polyester Thread

Is the universal recommendation for all fabrics. White and Black Thread are great to stock up on since they will be the most commonly used threads and can be easily combined with most fabrics. Purchase color thread as you purchase your fabric.

Bent-Handle Dressmakers Shears

The handles are bent up so the fabric stays flat on the table as you cut out your fabric.

Seam Ripper

This tool is used to remove stitches with out harming the fabric. This is a commonly used tool and will be used offend. Remember even the best of seamstresses make mistakes.

Tape Measure

This tool is perfect for taking body measurements and measuring curves.

Yard Stick or Meter Stick

This tool is perfect for laying out fabric and measuring straight lengths of fabric. Great for making hems from the floor.

Gauge

This tool is great for creating accurate hems and marking. The slide allows you to set the gauge for continuous measurements.

More Useful Tools

Rotary Ruler

Used for drafting squares and rectangles. 6×24 inch ruler is the most commonly used version. You will need a rotary cutting mat and rotary cutter to complete this package. It is great for quilting and for cutting squares for pillows. It also a great tool to have if you are making custom made skirts.

Rotary Cutter

This tool allows you to cut perfect straight lines if used along with a rotary ruler.

Rotary Mat

This tool protects the work surface from the rotary cutter. Be sure to protect your work surface from the rotary blade.

Pinking Shears

Using pinking shears to trim seam allowances is one of the many ways to prevent fabric from fraying.

Embroidery Scissors

Are small and compact and are perfect when you are hand sewing. They are great for trimming threads.

Tracing Wheel

There are two kinds: smooth wheel- causes a continuous solid line and spindle wheel – causes a dotted line. This tool is used in conjunction with tracing paper commonly called dressmakers carbon.

Tracing Paper

Commonly called dressmakers carbon, it is used for marking on smooth flat surface fabrics.

Seam Roll

Great for pressing tube seams such as sleeves and can be moved further into the sleeves or tube seams. It allows you to have easy ironing with less wrinkles in the sleeve area.
