Sewing a Fleece Hat, Scarf & Mittens

With the cold winter months near. It is hard to find warm inexpensive matching hats, gloves, and scarfs that will last the test of time. I recommend using fleece, it is a great fabric to use since it is warm, durable, washable, and requires no ironing. Here you will be able to create this project with these step by step instructions.

Supplies Needed:

1yd of Fleece
Thread
Dressmakers Shears
Punch
Dressmakers pins
Clear (see through) ruler or Rotary Ruler

Use your Serger for this project if you have one!

Tip: You can use a rotary cutter in place of scissors for précised cutting. Make sure you use a rotary mat to protect your work surface.)

Directions for Hat:

1. Cut a rectangle of fleece parallel with the salvage 14” length x the circumference of the head (width or stretch of fabric).
2. Fold rectangle in half along the width of the fabric matching the ends. Sew the length of the fabric together. Sew the top ends together.
3. To give hat a more finished look.
4. Cut a 4” x the circumference of the head (width or stretch of fabric).
5. Place fabric with right sides together matching the brim of hat. Sew (3” fabric edge) along the brim of hat. Turn ¼” of fabric edge towards the wrong side of the fabric. Stitch along fabric edge. Turn the remaining 4” of fabric toward the wrong (inside) of hat. Press or Pin. Stitch along fabric edge and along brim of hat.
6. Roll brim of hat as desire.
7. Punch hole in both of the top corners of hat. Attach pom poms. ( see instructions on pom poms below)
Directions for Scarf:

1. Cut rectangle of Fleece (9”x 50”width of fabric.) Trim of selvages.
2. Finish of edges with serger, zigzag, or hand blanket stitch.
3. Punch holes as desired on each end of scarf. Attach pom poms.

Directions for Mittens:

1. Make a pattern by placing your hand on kraft paper with your fingers together and thumb extended at a 90 degree angle. Trace around your hand and over the tops of your finger to create a round curve. Add ¾” all the way around the edges of the tracing and add 2 1/2” at the wrist to make a cuff.
2. Cut out two right hands from the fleece, flip the pattern then cut out two left hands of the fleece.
3. Cut two pieces of ¼” of elastic.
4. Take one right hand of fabric and one left hand of fabric. ( These are the bottoms of each hand)
5. On the wrong side of the fabric pin one end of elastic to the edge of the wrist line of fabric elastic.
6. Place the bottom piece of fabric on top of the top piece of pattern. (Making sure layout match). Serge or zigzag stitch along all edges except the wrist opening. (Do the same to the opposite hand.)
7. Turn mitten right side out. Serge or zigzag stitch around the wrist edge.

Directions for Pom Poms:

1. Cut a 3” wide x circumference of head (widge or stretch) of fleece. This is for each pom pom.
2. Fold rectangle into thirds. Stitch lengthwise down center of rectangles.
3. Cut into long strips of fabric making sure you do not cut stitch line.
4. Cut a 6” length of fabric.
5. Role the length of fabric tightly along stitch line. Wrap and tie 6” of fabric around pom pom and knot.
6. Leave ends long until secured to hat or scarf.
